Cloud Platform Engineer

  • Hybrid
    • Capital region, Uusimaa, Finland

Job description

Are you a cloud-minded engineer who thrives on automation, modern tooling and making life easier for other developers? Join one of Europe’s most established HR tech companies, Sympa, and help us accelerate our growth across the Nordics by elevating our cloud platform to the next level.

Type: Full-time, permanent
Location: Espoo or Lahti, Finland (hybrid)
Starting date: As soon as possible, negotiable

Over the last 20 years, Sympa has helped some of the largest companies in the Nordics put people at the centre of their strategy. With over 1,000 customers and a strong install base, we’re on a mission to continue growing. Our Engineering hubs are in Espoo (Finland), Lahti (Finland), and Poland, and you would join a highly talented, international team of over 55 engineering colleagues.

Our solution is built on Microsoft Azure. For the platform and cloud operations side, this means working with things like Azure Compute, networking, messaging, storage, databases, security, monitoring, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code. We are also continuously exploring cutting-edge technologies to modernise and improve our stack – from new Azure services and advanced observability to smarter automation and AI-assisted operations.

As a Cloud / Platform Engineer, you are part of our Cloud Operations team of five within Engineering. The team owns the cloud platform for both production and development environments of Sympa HR: infrastructure, pipelines, security, monitoring, cost control, access control and governance – plus all the tooling around them.

As part of the team, your mission will be to deliver a seamless cloud experience for our developers and keep Sympa’s platform stable, secure, compliant, and cost-effective.

What you get to do as a Cloud / Platform Engineer

Build and evolve our cloud platform

  • Develop and improve the services and tooling that power our Azure-based platform.

  • Enable developer self-service for provisioning, deploying and configuring services with minimal manual work.

  • Ensure smooth promotion of the same binaries across environments (dev → staging → production) with clear quality gates.

  • Continuously seek and adopt modern, cutting-edge solutions to improve observability, scalability, security and automation.

Own automation, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code together with the team

  • Develop and maintain our CI/CD pipelines from build to deployment.

  • Own and expand our Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to cover all cloud environments.

  • Automate builds, tests, security scans, deployments, configuration and other routine checks.

Keep Sympa stable, secure and compliant

  • Monitor and maintain production to meet our 99.9% availability target.

  • Implement and maintain IAM and access control according to our policies.

  • Manage networking and connectivity (VNets, VPNs, subnets, routing, firewalls, DNS, load balancing, etc.).

  • Ensure data security, governance and compliance of our cloud platforms.

  • Ensure deployments run smoothly and safely with minimum customer impact

Make operations smooth and transparent

  • Define and improve practices for system administration, access control, incident mitigation and post-incident analysis.

  • Communicate and document production incidents and share learnings with internal and external stakeholders.

Support our teams and culture

  • Collaborate with development teams, QA, architects, IT and external cloud/security partners.

  • Support colleagues on cloud, DevOps and production best practices.

  • Participate actively in architecture and infrastructure discussions, raising issues and ideas that improve availability, operability, security and cost-effectiveness.

  • Contribute to a culture where we continuously improve our stack, tools and ways of working.

Some of our services and integrations require attention outside regular business hours. From time to time, you need to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends to support critical changes or incident handling so flexibility with working hours is needed.

Job requirements

What do we value in our candidates?

The person we’re looking for is motivated, curious and comfortable taking responsibility. You want to make things better through automation, solid engineering practices and collaboration. You’re a strong team player who enjoys sharing knowledge and helping others work smoothly with cloud and production systems. What matters most is your hands-on experience and mindset.

Furthermore, the following skills and experience are needed to succeed:

  • Solid experience working with public cloud, especially Azure.

  • Comfortable with cloud fundamentals, including:

    • Networking (VNets, subnets, VPN, routing, load-balancing, DNS, firewalls)

    • Identity & access (IAM, RBAC, least privilege)

    • High availability, resilience and disaster recovery concepts.

  • Enjoy programming and scripting, ideally with:

    • Go and/or Python as your primary languages

    • .NET/C# experience is a strong plus, especially in an Azure context.

  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automation.

  • Work confidently with containers and modern Infrastructure as Code tools and patterns.

  • Understand cloud-native architectures, microservices and modern application deployment patterns.

  • Experience with monitoring, logging and alerting for production systems. Our stack is Grafana LGTM.

  • Able to analyze and solve complex technical issues, especially in production.

  • Communicate clearly in English and can explain technical topics at different levels of detail.

  • Eager to learn, experiment and adopt new technologies to keep our stack modern and competitive.

  • Good understanding of how applications use data across databases, storage and caching, and how this impacts scalability and reliability.

On top of the above mentioned, it’s a great plus but not a requirement if you have:

  • Previous software development experience in product teams.

  • Experience integrating code quality, security scanning and automated testing into pipelines.

  • Experience running highly available SaaS products at scale.

  • Familiarity with observability tools and concepts (e.g. metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, SLOs).

  • Hands-on experience with databases and performance tuning; Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL).

  • Experience working with cloud-based data lakes and large-scale data storage solutions.
